Berta Miller Newton, 96, 523 S. Oak, died today in Sapulpa
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 pm Friday at Owen Funeral Chapel.
Burial will follow at South Heights
Cemetery.
She was born March 4, 1896, in Mansfield, Mo., and moved to St. Louis, Mo., as a
child. Her father was with the George R. Barch Livestock Commission and her
mother was an exclusive milliner.
She graduated from the Ernest R. Kroeger School of Music before she graduated
from high school and later attended Missouri University. She married her
husband, Charles C. Newton, when her family moved back to Mansfield. The Newton's
traveled the U.S. and Canada before moving to Sapulpa in 1924.
Mrs. Newton taught piano to hundred of local students and originated the B.M.N.
Music Theory Charts used in schools and colleges today.
She was a member of the National and Oklahoma Music Teachers Associations, the
Tulsa Accredited Teachers Association, Town Hall of Tulsa, National Piano Guild,
Sapulpa Ladies Chamber of Commerce, Royal Neighbors of Sapulpa, the Business and
Professional Club, was vice president of the Iris Garden Club, was a soloist at
the First Church of Christ, Scientist, and a member of the Mother Church in
Boston.
Survivors include a number of cousins.
