Former Sapulpan Etta Weaver Berryhill Phillips, 91, of Silver City, N.M. died Tuesday, at Fort Bayard Medical Center.

Graveside services will be 10:30 am Friday at Green Hills Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Connell Ghormley officiating under the direction of Owen Funeral Home.

She was born March 19, 1900, in Sapulpa. She was a social worker and homemaker. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 50 years.

Mrs. Phillips was the first woman in the state of Oklahoma to run for the legislature.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Phillips, in 1982.

Survivors include daughter Bonnie Berryhill-Ocheltree of New Mexico; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held today for former Sapulpan Etta Weaver Berryhill Phillips at Green Hills Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Connell Ghormley officiating.

Burial followed under the direction of Owen Funeral Home.

Mrs. Phillips, 91, died Tuesday at the Fort Bayard Medical Center in New Mexico.

Phillips

Etta Weaver Berryhill Phillips, 91, passed away March 19, at Fort Bayard Hospital in New Mexico. She was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma to Bert and Rena Weaver. She graduated from Cottry College, Mo. in 1916, and was married shortly after to Glen Berryhill. The Weavers and the Berryhill’s were pioneer families in the Oklahoma Territory. Glen Berryhill passed away in 1958, she was later married to Col. Wayne D. Phillips. Etta was a 70 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Methodist Church and a Gold Star Mother. Her oldest son Jack was killed in World War II in Europe and younger son Bill was critically wounded in the Pacific and survived until 1983.

A hospital volunteer and an early Activist in Women’s rights, she ran for State Representative in 1932, but was defeated by only 26 votes. She remained active in politics all her life. She was an excellent Horsewoman and rode the trails every year at the Berryhill Ranch in Claremore, and rode in the Women’s Polo Team which she organized.

Etta counted among her friends, Will Rogers, Norman Vincent Peale, Jack Dempsey, and Al Jolson who nicknamed her “LITTLE ETTA.”

She is survived by her daughter Bonnie Berryhill Ocheltree of Gila, New Mexico. Grandchildren Tino and Alex Ocheltree of Gila, New Mexico, Janet Berryhill Bingman of Sapulpa and a nephew Sam Aubrey of Stillwater, Ok. and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were Friday, March 22, 1991 at 10:30 a.m. graveside in the Green Hill Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Connell Ghormley officiating, under the direction of Owen Funeral Home.
