OLD VETERAN CLAIMED BY DEATH TODAY
AGED SOLDIER OF CIVIL WAR, WELL KNOWN HERE, DIES AT
DAUGHTER'S HOME; OLD AGE IS CAUSE

Charles Pickett, veteran of the Civil was died at ten o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emry Jennings at 818 East Dewey, at the advanced age of eighty-one years. Death was due to the infirmities of old age and had been expected for some time.

Besides his widow Mr. Pickett is survived by eight children. They are: Mrs. Lottie Miller of Nebraska, H.D. Pickett of Knobnoster, Missouri, Mrs. Charles Chappell of Sedalia, Missouri, Charles J. Pickett of New Mexico, Mrs. M.L. Smith, Mrs. Jennings, E.R. Pickett, and O.B. Pickett all of this city. Mrs. Clyde Robinson, another daughter, died in this city about five years ago. Three other children are dead.

Mr. Pickett came to Sapulpa from Iowa in 1901 and this city has been his home since that time. He has watched the growth of the city from the time it was a very small village until it has become the prosperous city that it is today. During all this time he has taken a keen interest in civic affairs and had always been one of the factors for the betterment of civic conditions particularly to the church affairs. For many years he has been a member of the Methodist church and always took much pride in the growth and development of the local church.

At the outbreak of the civil war Mr. Pickett enlisted and was one of the few remaining G. A. R. veterans in this city. He attended as far as possible all gatherings of his old comrades and took a keen interest in them.

No funeral arrangements will be made until the children living in other states are heard from.

PICKETT FUNERAL TO BE HELD TUESDAY AFTERNOON

The funeral of Charles Pickett, aged and well known civil war veteran, who died Saturday is to held at the First Methodist church tomorrow at 3 p.m. Rev. Burt will officiate. Burial will be in the Sapulpa Cemetery.

OLD VETERAN BURIED TODAY

Charles Pickett, Well Known and Respected Citizen, Laid to Rest Here Today

Funeral services for the late Charles Pickett, who died Saturday morning were held at the M.E. Church this afternoon with the pastor, Rev. J.E. Burt in charge. Burial was in the Sapulpa Cemetery. A large crowd of old friends and neighbors, comrades, and associates attended the services and followed the body to its last resting place.

For seventeen years Mr. Pickett had been one of the prominent figures in Sapulpa and in his quiet unassuming way had done what he could to build a better city. For a number of years in the earlier history of the city he served on the city council and school board. Nearly all of the present school buildings were erected while he was a member of the board. 

Below is a brief summary of his life.
Charles Pickett was born in Onondago county, New York , June 16,1837, and died at this home in Sapulpa, Okla. April 5, 1919.

At the age of eight his parents moved west settling for a time in Ohio and Illinois, locating permanently in Wisconsin, where he grew to manhood and married, afterwards moving to Michigan. To this union four children were born, Sidney C., Addison Warren, Inez and Lottie the later being the only one now living who is the wife of Edgar Miller of Omega, Nebraska.

He returned to Wisconsin during the war and enlisted in the Fiftieth Wisconsin Infantry and was honorably discharged in June 1866, when he returned to Wisconsin and engaged in the mercantile business.

On April 28, 1873, he married Elizabeth Jane Jackson of Riverside, Wisconsin. To this union eight children were born, all of whom are now living except Lucretia Pickett Robinson, who died in August, 1913.

In 1873, this couple moved to Iowa and remained in that state continuously until 1902 except one year they lived in California. In 1902 Mr. Pickett with his family came to Sapulpa where they have since resided.

Mr. Pickett was raised a farmer and when a boy accompanied his father on various trips to Chicago with wheat and corn from their home in Wisconsin, the loads being hauled by ox teams.

His life has been active and he has enjoyed good health until the last four or five years. He was a member of the Local Post G. A. R., was made a Mason at Riverside, Wisconsin in 1869, and has been a member of the Methodist church about forty years.

He is survived by his widow, and these children: Mrs. Edgar Miller, Omega, Nebraska; Mrs. C. W. Chapell, Sedalia, Missouri; Mrs. Emry Jennings, Sapulpa; Mrs. Merton L. Smith, Sapulpa; H.D. Pickett, Knobnoster, MO; E.R. Pickett, Sapulpa; Charles Pickett of New Mexico and O.B. Pickett, Sapulpa.
