Maude Pierce: We're glad to be together
Maude Piece has only lived in Manteca for a couple of years, and she hasn't
had time to make too many friends. She stays home to care for her husband,
George, who is ill.
Maude and George came here from San Diego because they have a son living in
Manteca, and a daughter who will be moving to town soon. George has a bad case
of emphysema and he must stay on oxygen 24 hours a day. Maude says the costs are
tremendous but "we are thankful to be together".
The first thing she did when she was finally able to get out and about, was
to come to the senior center where she has begun to make friends. She says she
will be able to attend more often once her daughter is available to help her.
Maude is a friendly lady and wants to have time to socialize.
She was a nurse's aide for 30 years at the Santa Clara Medical Center and she
still does nursing. George weighed 78 pounds when she started taking care of him
and he's now up to 101, so I'm sure Maude is doing a good job.
George retired from the school department in Santa Clara after 25 years, but
he kept busy until he was forced to slow down because of his health. For a while
he had a visiting nurse one day a week after he came home from the hospital.
Then Maude took over and he's getting a lot of tender, loving care. The Pierces
have been married 59 years as of Jan. 18, this year.
They were married in Panama, Okla., in 1925 and have lived in California for
42 years. Their daughter and son-in-law who will be moving here soon, are
Kenneth and Berniese Bradley. Their son is Robert Pierce, of Manteca.
George worked at the Waco Chemical plant in Newark for several years
before joining the school department. The Pierces have two grandchildren
and three "greats."
