Sapulpa Herald
Sapulpa, Oklahoma
December 1, 2009

Complied and transcribed by Zoey Fryhover, 2009. Robbie Sewell, 87, of Tulsa, passed away November 27, 2009, in Tulsa.

She was born Feb. 12,1922, in Frogtown, Ark., and moved to Hartford, Ark., not long after, where she grew up. Her parents, Charlie Monroe Reed and Lena White Reed, had a farm there, where they grew cotton and raised their 12 children who survived to adulthood.

She met Leroy Sewell, a National Guardsman, of Ardmore, Okla., in 1940 and married him six weeks later in Provence, Okla. He became a full-time serviceman shortly thereafter. Their first child, Jerry Leroy Sewell, was born April 19,1941, but died the same day and was buried in Provence.

The couple then traveled around the United States for training prior to his deployment. They first lived at Fort Sill, Okla., before moving to Camp Barkley, Texas, and later to Pine Camp, N.Y. While there, they received news that another child was on the way.

Robbie returned to Arkansas to live with parents, while Leroy was deployed to Europe for World War II. Their daughter Robbie Paulette was born June 22,1943, the same day Leroy landed in Sicily with the famed 45th Infantry Division. He fought across Europe and received several citations before returning home in October 1944.

Their daughter Sandra Sue was born Feb. 15, 1948, in Ardmore. The family moved to Tulsa in 1950, where they would remain for the next 59 years. Leroy worked for W.C. Norris, and Robbie worked for the Mayo Hotel.

Their son Philip Stanley was born June 29,1952, in Tulsa.

Leroy became the pastor at Midway Full Gospel Church in Oakhurst, Okla., in September 1958, where he would remain until retiring in December 2007. Robbie worked at the Mayo until the early 1960s and continued to participate in her husband’s ministry until he retired.

She enjoyed talking on the telephone, reading, quilting and doing word puzzles. She valued family above all else and never turned away anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Reuben, Willie, Jessie, Ruth, Abe, Annie, Eula, Johnnie and Charlie; her newborn son; and two grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Reverend Leroy Sewell, sisters, Lena Branch and Margie Alice Hampton, both of Tulsa; children, Paulette Maxville, of Sand Springs, Okla., Sandra Prather and husband James, of Skiatook, Okla., and Philip Sewell and wife Mary, of Owasso, Okla.; six grandchildren; 13 great-?-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Smith Funeral Chapel.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm. on December 2, 2009 at Midway Full Gospel Church in Tulsa with burial to follow at Woodland Cemetery in Sand Springs.

The family wishes to thank Mom’s many care-givers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sapulpa, Okla.
