Mrs. Shumard is Taken by Death in NY Hospital Prominent Sapulpan succumbs to flu
and heart attack; rites on Wednesday.
Mrs. Evelyn Hughes Shumard, pioneer Sapulpa resident, prominent in civic, social
and educational circles of this city for many years, died in a New York City
hospital yesterday of a heart complication following a recent siege of
influenza.
She is survived by her husband, Rush Shumard, who was at her bedside in New York
City, by a daughter Mrs. Alice Kramer of McLeansboro, Ill., by two sons, Gordon,
cadet in West point, and Marion, of Indiana, and one grandchild.
Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. H. H. Burns of this city; Mr. R. E. L.
Majors of California; two brothers Huber Hughes of this city; and Carl Hughes of
Oklahoma City
Funeral services have been tentatively set for 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at
the Methodist church. Burial will be in the Sapulpa
Cemetery. The body will arrive here early Wednesday.
Mrs. Shumard was 57 years old. She was born in Hinton, W. Va. And came to
Sapulpa with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Gordon C. Hughes, in 1898.
She attended public school here and later attended the University of Oklahoma.
She later taught in the Sapulpa schools, in Tulsa and Henryetta.
She was married to Rush Shumard in June of 1911.
Mrs. Shumard took an active role in church, cultural, club and civic activities
over a long period of years. She has been a member and president of various
P.T.A. groups, organized the Pioneer Mother Singers, popular ballad singers
here. She was a member of both the U. D. C. and D. A. R. She was a member of the
early day Ekhuse club of this city.
A historian of considerable note in state educational circles she frequently
contributed early day items to Oklahoma college historians and a few years ago
was a visiting student at the University of Oklahoma where two of her children
were in school.
Mrs. Shumard contributed newspaper feature articles to the Tulsa World, Muskogee
Phoenix, Kansas City, St. Louis papers, and other periodicals over a long period
of years. Most of these were of a historical nature.
Negotiations were under way during her present stay in New York City for the
publication of a historical novel on Oklahoma's pioneering background which she
had been compiling for a number of years.
She left here only a few months ago to join her husband in the east.

Shumard Rites Here Tomorrow
Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Hughes Shumard, prominent resident here for
many years, will be held at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Methodist church
with Rev. J. W. Whitworth in charge. Burial will be made in the Sapulpa
cemetery.
Mrs. Shumard died in New York City after a brief illness and heart attack. She
is survived by her husband, a daughter, two sons, a sister and brother here, a
sister in California and a brother in Oklahoma City.
She was well known for her interest in historical and educational pursuits here,
for her writings and fine collection throughout the years of antiques.
The body of the deceased will arrive here early tomorrow.
Pall bears at the service include Joe Fulp, Claude Davenport, Sam Allen, W. B.
Key, T. L. Blakemore, O. B. Pickett.
