Fire Kills Wife
SAPULPA, Jan. Fire destroyed the 17-room
ranch home of Mr. and Mrs. Max Meyer early Sunday and the body
of the wife was found in the ashes Sunday night.
Authorities said the victim was Mrs.
Jeannette Meyer, about 70—daughter of a wealthy Kansas City
family.
Meyer suffered second-degree burns and
shock trying to rescue his wife from the $100,000 home near this
eastern Oklahoma town, investigators said.
Mrs. Meyer is survived by a brother, F. L. Wolfberg, and two
sisters. Ida and Alice Wolfberg, all of Kansas City.
Cause of the blaze was not known.
Meyer, 73, said his wife smelled smoke
and that he led her down the stairs through fumes and smoke.
However, he said she pulled away from him and went back
upstairs.
Meyer said he attempted to get back
through heavy smoke up the stairs but was overcome. He was found
by two persons who live on his 2,000-acre ranch.
