SAPULPA - A funeral is planned today for
former state Sen. John W. Young, a Sapulpa lawyer who served in
the state Senate for more than two decades. Young represented
parts of Creek, Okfuskee and Lincoln counties from 1964 to 1986.
He died Saturday at age 85. Young was elected to the state
Senate as a Democrat in 1964. He founded a ministry for young
women that is now known as Freedom House. Young is survived by
his wife, three sons and three brothers. Services are 10 a.m.
today at the First Baptist Church in Sapulpa .

As Governor of the State of Oklahoma,
hereby direct the appropriate steps be taken to fly all American
and Oklahoma flags on State property at half-staff from 8:00
a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009, to honor
former State Senator John W. Young, an Oklahoma resident, who
died on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at age 85.
Senator Young was elected to the
Oklahoma State Senate in 1964 and served the State of Oklahoma
with honor and distinction for 22 years. Senator Young was a
dedicated public servant and a faithful representative to his
constituents. He was the third generation of attorneys in his
family, and passed his love for law down to one of his sons and
one of his grandsons. Throughout his life, Senator Young made
great contributions to the State of Oklahoma.
