Blind, Homeless and Minus
Kin, Sapulpa Girl Splendid
Example of Never Give Up
SAPULPA. Dec. 7.-(Special) Blind, homeless and without
relatives, Mercedes Donaghy probably is Oklahoma's outstanding
example of pluck and perseverance. Seventeen years ago, Mercedes
was a 3-months-pld foundling on the doorstep of Sapulpa
Children's home, an orphanage. Today she is a talented young
lady with ambitions for a journalistic career and she has a
reasonable amount of ability for achieving her plans.
In the last 11 years. Mercedes has been a student at
the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee. The first six
years of her life and her successive Sumner vacations were spent
at the Sapulpa orphanage until two years ago, when maintenance
funds were exhausted. Mercedes and 23 other children became
homeless as the depression drove them out of that shelter from
the storm, where benevolent hands had led them and
comforted them.
To get back to the story of Mercedes Donaghy, let us
remember her
handicaps only as high centers in the road to success - not
barriers. Mercedes has learned as all of us should learn, that
success is not to be measured in terms of wealth. She believes
that success may be gained in overcoming great handicap and
according to that logical interpretation, she has found a real
prosperity.
Mercedes is a teacher - not one of the expounders of academic
theory, but one of those teachers of the profound truths of
live, whose faith, hope and courage are sources of inspiration
to those with whom she comes into contact.
Congenial, intelligent and cheerful Mercedes finds life to be
an endless flowing fountain of pleasure for those who adjust
themselves properly. Her synonym for happiness is usefulness.
Skilled in culinary and textile arts, she earns her summer board
and room in the homes of friends by doing general household
work. She makes dresses, rugs and many useful household
articles, such as baskets, desk sets and doorstops.
