John C. Sledge, Jr., was born November 30,
1919 in Red Rock, Okla. He died May 29, 2010 in Tulsa.
John was a World War II veteran, having
served in the Pacific with the Navy. After his return, he
studied journalism at the University of Oklahoma, and worked for
Phillips Petroleum in Texas. He later became interested in
photography, and eventually became a professional photographer,
owning Sledge Studio in Sapulpa. He took the senior pictures and
prom photographs for many Sapulpa High School students.
He married Betty Collins Sledge in 1973. After retiring, he and
Betty became avid fishermen, spending winters fishing in Texas
for 14 years. He also enjoyed travel. He and Betty traveled to
the United Kingdom and Mexico, and took a cruise through the
Caribbean. Later in his life, John wrote a remarkable journal
about his life, called “Coming of Age During the Great
Depression”.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his
daughter and son, Deana and Calvin; four grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren, and was anticipating the birth of his first
