Bill Delk services planned Monday - @ 2:54 pm PST
Bill Delk, former Clinton “Man of the Year” who had played Santa Claus to
many a local youngster over the years, died early this morning (Thursday,
June 7, 2001) at Corn Heritage Village in Corn. He was 68 and had suffered
for some time with diabetes, heart problems and other ailments.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Centerpoint
Cemetery near Putnam. A “celebration of life” will follow at 2 p.m. that day
at the Clinton Church of Christ with Pat Peters and Bill’s son, Garland
Delk, officiating.
Delk was born Sept. 3, 1932, at Lake Valley, the son of Raymond and Jewell
(Deputy) Delk. In 1934 his family moved to Clinton where he lived the rest
of his life, except for nine months at Woodward in the 1950s and the last
year which he alternated between hospitals and the care center in Corn.
A 1950 graduate of Clinton High School, Delk worked as a young man for
McClellan’s Variety Store, for Bills Bakery as a route salesman, and for the
Nash-Finch Company in the warehouse and as a salesman. It was during the
latter employment that he lived in Woodward.
In 1957 Delk began work in the auto parts business. He was employed first by
Mahanay Brothers, then had his own Hub City Auto Parts for several years
before ending his career with Clinton Auto Supply.
As a parts supplier, he spent many summer evenings assisting stranded
motorists or helping farmers trying to complete wheat harvest.
He was a Clinton volunteer fireman for 20 years, and for several years he
was the moving force behind the Western Oklahoma Livestock Show. His work
with youth earned him honorary membership in the Clinton chapter of Future
Farmers of America, as well as an Honorary State Farmer designation.
Delk served three terms on the Clinton Board of Education and was named “Man
of the Year” in 1978 by the Chamber of Commerce. He was president of the
Clinton Lions Club in 1976 and ’77.
But it was his “work” as Santa Claus that he enjoyed most. He began that
duty as a teenager at a church social and continued it until his health
began to fail in 1998. He not only brought smiles to the children of the
community but to adults and the elderly as well, carrying his bag of goodies
to schools, civic clubs, nursing homes and the Veterans Center.
He also enjoyed cooking, especially smoked meats and baked beans.
Delk was a longtime member of the Broadway Heights Baptist Church which his
parents helped organize. He committed his life to Christ as a teenager, was
ordained as a deacon in 1962, and served as Sunday school superintendent
intermittently for 25 years. He also taught Sunday school classes himself.
In 1998, at the time of his second marriage, he became a member of the
Custer Avenue Church of Christ.
He was married first to his high school sweetheart, the former Dee Ola
Addington, on April 6, 1951. They lived on a farm east of Clinton.
Following her death in 1996, he married Barbara Powers in 1998.
She survives, along with his three children and eight grandchildren. The
children and their families are daughter Pam Sauer of Broken Arrow, her
husband Don, and children Nik, Becky and Megan; son Garland of El Reno, his
wife Susan, and children Chelsea and Cody; and daughter Katherine Hinds of

Ethan.
Also surviving are Delk’s mothers-in-law, Ruby Addington of Oklahoma City
and Reva Williams, Clinton; five step-children, Mark Powers of Anaheim,
Calif., Beth Holmes, Orlando, Fla., Donna Miller, Orange, Calif., Lisa
Schilling, San Diego, Calif., and Scott Powers, Clinton; 16
step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one bro-ther, Clarence.
