Hickory Grove School
A log house was first built here, and a Cherokee Indian School was established in 1874. William Coffee Woodall was the first teacher. The log school was later destroyed by fire and another was build and used until this present house was erected. Neighbors met and cut timbers north and west of the cite, on Indian domain, to build the frame for this house. Dr. Widdows built the house with volunteer help. Expenses were met by donations.
On April 9, 1890, school opened with A. S. Wyly as teacher. The first School board members here were: Mac McCullough, Solon James, and Alex Copeland. This house has always been used as a place of worship. In 1875 the first grave was placed in the cemetery.
