Jan 25, 1864 and is b. in the Plummer's (Penland) Graveyard, Fleming Co, KY.    Betty and Lowell Dagenais of Atchison KS looked very carefully at his tombstone in 1984.  ....As Richard's Census records progresses, he grew "younger;" reporting each time that he was less than ten yrs older than the   previous census year!

Was told at one time that David Choate and Judith were buried in McKenzie

Cemetery in Limestone County, TX (near Groesbeck).  Visited there but did not

locate their graves.  There are a few unmarked graves, a couple of them

adjacent to Jesse Choate and Jenny Jane Crowell Choate.  It is a possibility. I

have also been told that if they were buried in Eutaw Cemetery, their graves

are not marked.

It has been "bounced around" among other researchers that David (1776) may have had another wife also.

The information on the children of David Choate and Judith Sevier was given to

me by Elouise Beard Smith, Bryan, TX. Her notes also states that Martha Jane

Choate, daughter of Thomas Marion Choate, told her daughter Ann Thompson of

David Choate, age 106, sitting in a corner smoking a pipe in Kosse, TX

(Limestone Co.)

Other information received from John Scott Yates, Wichita Falls, TX, has David

being born ca. 1780, died ca. 1882 and Judith Sevier's year of birth ca. 1785.

!1860 Jasper County, TX Census.

!Texas General Land Office.  A Mexican Title was granted to DAVID CHOAT, dated

August 12, 1835.  This title was to one league of land (4,428.4 acres).  One

league of land was the amount generally allocated to heads of households under

the provisions of the 1825 Colonization Law of said state.  The petition

section of this document indicates that David Choate was married and had a

family consisting of his wife and six children (names not given).  The land

covered by this title is located in what is today Jefferson Co., TX. The document is in Spanish and bears David Choat's signature.  Also recieved the

Original English field notes and character certificate.  I'm not certain that

this David Choate is OUR David Choate. I really don't think so. MBMc

It has been suggested that maybe one of David Bartlett's grandmothers maiden

name was OLIVER or STRICKLAND.

From Irene Choate Williams - "The 1870 census proves to me that DAVID BARTLETT was a son of DAVID and JUDITH because of DAVID living with him . . . DAVID was 85 in the 1860 census so I think this 85 in the 1870 census is a mistake and that it should be 95.  He is supposed to have lived to be 106 or 107 years old and living with his son JESSE, but he is not listed with JESSE in 1880 and if he was born about 1775 then he would have had to live until 1882 to be 107 years old.  It could be that he was actually born in 1773 and died in 1880 before the census records were taken??"

CHOAT (believe to be a cousin to BARTLETT).  Also in this census is DAVID BARTLETT's in laws (JUDSONS) and his niece PERMELIA (CHOATE) JUDSON, dau. of JESSE CHOATE and his nephew, DAVID LYNCH (son of his sister SINA).

1870 Limestone Co., TX - Also listed in this census is DAVID OLIVER and family

and JESSE, family and married sons.

1880 Limestone Co., TX - Also listed in this census was JAMES, son of D.B.  and

JESSE and more of his family.  DAVID OLIVER was living in Johnson Co., TX.

1900 Tarrant Co., TX - DAVID B. & wife (Polly) are listed as being married 55

years and having 9 children and 6 still living.  They are living with DAVID

OLIVER.

!Have copy of D. B. Choate's pension application. Comptroller's File No. 5383.

He was granted his pension on November 16, 1899.  He was 75 years old at the

time and had lived in Hill County for "some nine or ten years."  When asked

about his physical condition he replied "I am very frail ..... and have not

been able to work in the past 10 years."  Attached are two sworn affidavits,

one of Ben Alexander, the other of Alex Alexander.  They were brothers who knew David since 1861 and had served with him in the same company in the Civil War. Both resided in McClennan County, Texas.

Have information that David Bartlett died in 1905 in Ft. Worth, TX and is

buried there.  Am working on that at this time. 12-28-95  Also that his wife,

Polly Ann Judson Choate died in 1902 and is buried in Hill County, TX. Trying

Now believe David Bartlett Choate is buried in Noah Cemetery, near Arlington,

TX. His eldest son, David Oliver Choate, is supposedly buried there (no marker)

and a son, Steven Strickland Choate is buried there, at least that's what his

obituary states (no marker). Considering that David Bartlett was living probably with his son, David Oliver, when he died, I would think David Oliver Choate probably buried his father, David and his mother Polly in the cemetery where he would be buried. ??? I've been to Noah Cemetery and have taken pictures (over all view since I've found no grave markers for any of them). There are supposedly over 100 graves there, MANY not marked. Really, still a mystery as of this date, March 2000. MMc

Have not done much research on the Judson line.

Have found a Nathan Jutson (notice surname spelling) and a Lucinda Brockman who were married in Sangamon County, Ill. on Aug. 12, 1822.  As I recall on our

visit to McKenzie Cemetery in Limestone Co., TX, there were a couple of crude

headstones with the name "Jutson" or "Jetson" carved into them but I failed to

get pictures of them.  Will next trip!  I believe the stones there could be

Polly's parents.

Notes 5-30-95, Also on the 1860 Limestone Co., TX census, a Nathan Judson, age 55, born in Vermont is listed with a wife named Lucinda, age 54, who was born in South Carolina.  They were living next to M. (Mathew?) Judson, who was born in Illinois.  Living next to M. Judson is Bartlett Choate with wife P. A.

(Polly Ann) with children Oliver, age 15, Nathan, age 12, Thomas, age 9, M. A.

(Martha Ann), age 8, James, age 6, Jessie, age 5, and Bartlett, age 3, all

living in the same household.

Have now taken pictures of "Judson/Jutson" graves at McKenzie Cemetey in

Limestone Co., TX.

Have copy of 1830 Illinois census. Did find Nathan Jutson on it and the census

does show a child that could be Polly Ann - census very hard to read.

Have copy of Nathan Jutson marriage to Lucinda BROCKMAN in Sangmon Co., IL.

Obituary of Steve S. Choate - sent to me from Sue Muggli. Do not know which newspaper this was in.

Steve Strickland Choate, 85, of 3501 James, a retired building contractor, died Monday afternoon at a Fort Worth hospital. He was born at Kosse and had lived in Tarrant County 45 years. He is survived by three sons, T. L. and D. T. Choate, both of Fort Worth and L. R. Choate of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Hill of Phoenix, 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Owens-Brumley Funeral Chapel and burial will be at the Noah Cemetery, Arlington.

David Oliver Choate also went by "Ollie." His birth info is from census and the Fort Worth Genealogy Society publications, "Footprints," where an Ollie Choate is listed as a Confederate veteran of Tarrant Co., TX. I have not been able to locate his grave but have been told he is buried in Jefferson Co., OK. I do have a picture of David Oliver Choate and his wife. David's brother, William Nathan, is buried in Orr, OK ( Jefferson Co.

Nov. 1999 - I now have new info for D. O. Choate. A descendent (Sue Muggli) has sent me his obituary. He lived to be 90 years old so he would have died in 1934. The name of the newspaper and date published has been cut off but the mortuary that handled the body was in Ft. Worth (Shannon's Mortuary). The obit does not state where he was buried. Sue also sent copy of Steven Strickland Choate's obit. He is buried in Noah Cemetery in Ft. Worth. I'm going to try to find inscription book for Noah Cemetery. Sue had been there but says that none of the stones are readable.

  Another name was stricken yesterday from the list of surviving Civil War Veterans, that of D. O. Choate, 90.

  Mr. Choate, whose hip was broken several weeks ago, had been confined to his bed until his death yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. E. Smith, 716 East Baltimore Avenue. He had lived here 27 years.

  Born in Polk County, Mr. Choate moved with his father, D. B. Choate, to Limestone County in the fifties. He was reared near the present site of Kosse.

  Mr. Choate joined the Confederate Army in 1862 and was assigned to Bass' Regiment, Twentieth Cavalry of Texas. He served with that regiment in Missouri for a year. Later he was transferred to Cook's Regiment, heavy artillery, stationed on Galveston Island. He remained there until he was mustered out in 1865.

  Soon after the Civil War ended, he married Miss Elsie Ann Richardson, who died in 1930 at the age of 84.

  Besides his daughter, Mr. Choate is survived by two sons, Tom and A. J. Choate, both of Fort Worth; two brothers, S. S. Choate, Fort Worth, and T. M. Choate, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

  The body is at Shannon's Mortuary pending completion of funeral arrangements.

(Sue Muggli has called Shannon's Mortuary in Fort Worth/Arlington and they have no record of place of burial.)

    The slowly diminishing ranks of the Confederate War Veterans here will marshal their forces once again tomorrow - as honorary pallbearers at the funeral of a comrade, D. O. Choate.

     Mr. Choate, 90, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. E. Smith, 716 (?) East Baltimore Avenue, yesterday.

     The 10 veterans still living here will rise slowly to attention as their comrade is buried, draped in a Confederate flag.

     Entering the fight for the Southern cause at the early age of 21, Private Choate fought with the 10th Cavalry of Texas, under General Bass, for a year. During this time, he saw action mainly in Missouri.

     In 1863, he was stationed at Galveston Island with Cook's Regiment of heavy artillery. He remained there until the end of the war.

     Shortly after the close of the war, he married Elsie(?) Ann Richardson, who died three years ago, at the age of 84.

     For the past two weeks he had been confined in bed because of a broken hip, received in a fall at his home.

     Born in Polk County, Mr. Choate spent the most of his life in Limestone County.

     He is survived by two sons, Tom and A. J. Choate: one daughter, Mrs. M. E. Smith: two brothers, S. S. Choate and T. M. Choate of Oklahoma: 11 grandchildren: 11 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

T. M. CHOATE DIES SUDDENLY EARLY SUNDAY ...From Foard County News, June 16, 1938

Funeral services for Thomas M. Choate, 89, were held in the First Methodist Church of Crowell Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Elder L. E. Garner, pastor of the Quanah Church of Christ officiating and was assisted by Rev. E. L. Yeats, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was made in the Crowell Cemetery by the side of his wife, who died here on May 16, 1934.

Mr. Choate died in his sleep early Sunday morning, presumably as the result of heart failure, as he attended a political speaking in Crowell Saturday night and seemed hearty at athat time. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ada Beard, in Crowell.

A Masonic burial ceremony was held at the grave by Crowell Lodge No. 840 A. F. & A. M. Womack Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Active pall bearers were T. S. Haney, Jeff Bruce, Granville, Lanier, Glenn Offield, Charles Fergeson and Henry Black.

Mr. Choate was born in Peach Tree Village, Polk County, Texas on February 6, 1849. When five years of age, he moved to Limestone County where he married Miss Josephine Springfield in Kosse in 1876.

Sixteen children were born to this union. Three children died in infancy and a son died at the age of 17 years. Eight children, two sons and six daughters survive and are as follows: S.S. Choate of Snyder, Oklahoma and W. D. Choate of Rush Springs, Oklahoma; Mrs. G. L. Henson of Overton, Mrs. W. H. Haught of Rush Springs, Oklahoma, Mrs. W. F. Foreman of Spur, Mrs. Ada Beard of Crowell, Mrs. D. G. Pauley of Margaret and Mrs. C. C. Mott of Manitou, Oklahoma.

Mr. Choate moved with his family in 1887 to Hill County where he lived until moving to Snyder, Oklahoma in 1908. In 1934, Mr. Choate moved to Crowell and had been living with his daughter since the death of his wife.

He became a member of the Methodist Church while living in Limestone County, and about thirteen years ago, he united with the Church of Christ in Snyder.

Other survivors include one borther, S. S. Choate of Fort Worth; twenty-five grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Out of town relatives who attended the service were Mrs. Henson of Overton; Mr. & Mrs. S. S. Choate of Snyder; W. D. Choate of Rush springs; Mrs. Hought and three daughters of Rush Springs; Mrs. Mott of Manitou; Mrs. Foreman and four children; Bailey Mott, a grandson and wife of Frederick, Oklahoma; Mrs. Harold Miller, a granddaughter and husband of Snyder, Oklahoma; Mrs. Homer Prater, a niece of Fort Worth; Dewitt Choate, a nephew of Fort Worth.

Out of town friends present were Mr. & Mrs. Foy Pauley of Olney and Mr. & Mrs. Roy Kirkpatrick of Fort Worth.

Funeral Today for Mrs. T. M. Choate...From May 17, 1934 Foard County News

Funeral services will be held in Crowell, this afternoon, Thursday, at the Methodist Church at 3 o'clock for Mrs. T. M. Choates, 74, who died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dolph Pauley, of the Margaret community. The services will be conducted by Rev. George E. Turrentine and Interment will follow in the Crowell Cemetery.

Mrs. Choate and her husband were in the process of moving from Snyder, Oklahoma to Margaret when death came. She had just recently reached her daughter's home at Margaret.

Survivors are the husband and six daughters, one of whom is Mrs. G. L. Henson, of Overton, Texas, a former resident of Crowell, Mrs. Faye Badleman of Overton, a former resident here also, is a granddaughter of the deceased.

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Smith, 71, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. L. R. Perry, 3211 Willing, where she made her home. Mrs. Smith, the widow of Jeff Smith, operated a real estate business at her address. She was a native of Cleburne and had lived here for 35 years. She was a member of the Berry Street Baptist Church. Survivors include four other daughters, Mmes. Claude Goddard of Fort Worth, Gene Smith of Wichita Falls, Ethel Foster of Bell Garden, Ca;., and Elza O'Kelly of San Antonio; a son, G. H. Nate Choate (Nathan Lloyd Choate)

March 14, 1911 - Sept. 24, 1987, Funeral services for Nate Choate, 76, of Wynnewood, who died Thursday, Sept. 24, at Pauls Valley General Hospital, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26, at Stufflebean Funeral Chapel. Rev. Ben Rodgers and Rev. Charles Newfield will officiate and burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood, under the direction of Stufflebean Funeral Home. Choate was raised in Ringling, OKla. and had lived in Wynnewood for the past 31 years. He was a retired farmer and rancher. He marrie Valley Baker on Dec. 27, 1932 in Pauls Valley. He was preceded in death by one brother, Earnest Choate, one son, Keyy Deaune Choate, and one great grandson, Olion Kristopher Anthony. He was a deacon in the Wynnewood Church of God. O.L. Henson, 91, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at an Abilene retirement center. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Elmwood Memorial Park with Jim Hall officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South. Mr. Henson was born on June 28, 1908, in Sayre, Ik. His youth was spent in Electra, Tx, where he attended school. He met and married Agnes Carter in Electra on June 20, 1929. For many years he owned and operated Henson Drilling Co., operating drillin rigs in Texas, New Mexico, Illionois, and Michigan. Before retirement in 1979, he and his wife were members of Abilene Country Club, Petroleum Club of Abilene, and many professional organizations. He was a member of Clyde Church of Christ. Mr. Henson was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes, in March, 1990. He is survived by his two sons, Jack Henson of Alba, Tx, and Jerry Henson of Abilene; three sisters, Beulah Beidleman of Dallas, Darlene Bridges of Lawton, OK, and Pauline Whitaker of Carlsbad, NM; six grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. Paullbearers will be Lee Henson, Carter Henson, Edward Henson, Jay Henson, Greg Berry, and Billy Hicks. Memorials may be sent to the donor's favorite charity.
