While looking for material on Old Greer County, Texas records in the Indian Archives at
Oklahoma City, OK, this document was found in January, 1986. I copied, by hand, the pages
of information because these are the first Greer County, Texas records that we have found.
These old books had been taken to the Archives by Lem Tittle in the 1940's and he had
written a letter saying that he was the last living member of the old Greer County, Texas
historical Society. He was afraid the books would be thrown away if he did not save them.
Thay had survivied more than one fire and years of neglect. The weathering of the leather
had left them very stiff and fragile. You could hear the book creak when you turned pages.
These books have been put on microfilm and are in the Genealogy section of the Southern
Parairie Library in Altus, OK for you to use. You will find the name of the grantor,
grantee, kind of instrument, date of instrument, date of filing, book and page number
where they may be found in the deed book.
We have never found the old deed book from Greer County Texas in 1887-1890.
