DAVENPORT, Mrs. Nancy
Waurika News Democrat,
Friday, January 12, 1940
(This obit was under the tidbit column "Hastings
Items")
Thursday morning at 10 minutes past 12 the death angel claimed Hastings oldest resident and one of her pioneer citizens, Mrs. Nancy DAVENPORT.
Mrs DAVENPORT was a true daughter of the Old South. She married her pride and dignity as only Southern women accustomed to wealth and slaves could. She never really became accustomed to nor could understand the Western ways of Texas and Oklahoma.
Mrs. DAVENPORT took the flu in February 1935 and thought she recovered from it in three weeks her vitality was so sapped that she had to remain in bed the greater part of the time the rest of her life. Christmas dinner in 1938 was the last meal she ever ate with the family. She had been practically blind for the last 12 years, but was never heard to complain of her affliction. Her daughter, Mrs Mary SPEARS, took such loving care of her that she looked like a young girl instead of an aged woman.
Nancy Jennings was born in Clark County, Georgia, March 10, 1841, and died Janurary 4, 1940 at her home in Hastings at the age of 98 years, 9 months and 23 days. On February 4, 1858, she and Seaborn L. DAVENPORT were married by Rev Henry W. SHEATS. To this union were born 9 sons and 4 daughters, two of whom preceded her in death. Nine of the children were present at the funeral. The family moved to Texas in 1881, then to Indian Territory in 1886. In 1906 they moved to Hastings where Mr. Davenport died Nov. 4, 1910. Since that time she has made her home with her son Jennings B. DAVENPORT. Her daughter Mrs. Mary SPEARS came to live with them and care for her mother 10 years ago. She obeyed the gospel in 1895 and lived true to her Maker until the end of her life's journey.
Mrs. DAVENPORT leaves to mourn her passing her children; Stillwell, Whit, and Sam of Duncan; Charley of Marlow; Weldon, Devine, Texas; Emmett, Garber; Marshall, County line; Mrs Lillie MIDKILL, Midland, Texas; Mrs Clara FRASER, Ardmore; Jennings (Buddy) and Mrs Mary SPEARS of Hastings; 36 grandchildren, and a number of great grandchildren and some great great grandchildren and other relatives and a host of freinds, who feel that their loss is heaven's gain.
Funeral services were conducted in the home Thursday afternoon at 3:30 by Elder OSTELOH, assisted by Elder CLEVENGER of the Church of Christ. The body was interred in the Hastings cemetary by the side of her beloved husband.

Mrs. R.B. ETTER
Waurika News Democrat,
Friday, June 19, 1953
BOYDSTUN, BURBANK, CORDONNIERE, CUTTER, DICKEY, ETTER, GOODGER, HARRELL, TOBIAS
Mrs. R.B. ETTER
Death came quietly Saturday afternoon to Mrs. R.B. ETTER, a
gallant, little white haired woman, who had been waiting for His
coming some time. Deprived of her eyesight several years ago she
had looked forward to the time "when we shall see each other
face to face and know as we are known; where there shall be no
further walking in darkness for there is no night."
Mrs. ETTER had been a patient in an Enid hospital for some time having moved to that city from her old home town here to be near her daughter, Mrs. J.B. CORDONNIERE and family. Dr. CORDONNIERE being her son as well as physician.
She came back home Saturday night, back to the town she had loved so long and so well, and stayed in the home of a sister, Mrs. Wes BOYDSTUN, until time for farewell services. They were conducted Monday morning at 10 o'clock in her home church, The First Methodist, where she had loved, prayed, and labored for many years.
The pastor, Rev. Addison CUTTER, had charge of the services assisted by Rev. Stewart DICKEY. Interment was in the family plot of the Waurika cemetery where she sleeps by her beloved husband who preceded her in death several years. Eliza HARRELL, one of a family of seven girls and one boy, was born in Mobile, Ala. When she was ten years old, the family moved to Boyd, Texas, where she grew up. In 1902 she married R.B. ETTER at Decatur, Texas. They came to Waurika in 1907 where he operated a cotton gin for several years and she was his bookkeeper. After his death she engaged in business for herself and was successful until her health failed. She was forced ;then to retire from public life but easily kept in touch with outside activities, until she lost her eyesight. Even then, with a surprising gallantry, she carried on. She kept a companion in the beginning but after she learned her way around the house, after she had access to the library of "Reading Books for the Blind", she was largely on her own. She would sit enthralled to listen to scripture or some selections, the best in prose and poetry; she kept abreast of the news by radio and took a courageous stand against loneliness and loss of interest in outside affairs. One of the brightest spots in Mrs. ETTER's life was always the daily visits with her sister, Mrs. T.J. GOODGER.
After she lost her eyesight Mr. GOODGER ran a line between the two houses and Mrs. ETTER hooked her cane over this and continued to make daily trips to the GOODGER home, for much happy companionship and visiting.
The ETTER home was blessed with one daughter, Lavelle, Mrs. Byron CORDONNIERE, who was all that a daughter should be in love, gentleness, and patience. Lavelle's husband was always spoken of as "my son", and Lavelle's daughter, was her grandmother's pride and joy in all the beauty of little girlhood and young womanhood.
Other survivors of the immediate family are Mrs. Vasti TOBIAS, Oklahoma City; Mrs Roy BURBANK, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. BOYDSTUN and Mrs GOODGER of this city. Mrs. ETTER is being missed these days but her feet are set in shining rays of light and she sees clearly each step of the way.

E. E. NALL
Edward Edwin Nall, who suffered a stroke of paralysis Friday,
March 12, and was taken to a sanitarium at Sherman, Texas,
succumbed to the attack Sunday of this week. It will be
remembered that Mr. Nall was engaged in setting out trees when he
suffered the stroke. He was immediately taken home and medical
aid summoned, and improved sufficiently to be taken to Sherman.
His entire left side was affected, even causing temporary mental
derangement and loss of speech. At Sherman he was under the care
of his brother, Dr. R. B. Nall, but the shock proved too severe
and medical skill was without avail insofar as recovery was
concerned.
The remains were shipped to Waurika Tuesday morning and funeral services were conducted at the family home that afternoon by Rev. J. O. Peterson, pastor of the Methodist Church. Burial took place at the Waurika Cemetery at 4 oclock. The immense floral offerings and the large concourse of friends that followed the remains to their last resting place bore evidence of the fact that immediate members of the family are not the only ones who mourn his untimely demise.
Mr. Nall was only 42 years of age, and the entire community regrets the fact that he should depart from his loved ones so early in life. He was one of the citys biggest property owners, and never did the opportunity prove itself that he was not found an aggressive and conservative booster for the town.
Among the immediate relatives surviving are a wife, Fanny, and six children, Edward, Lillye May, Thomas P., Josephine, Henry, and Edwina, residing in Waurika; three brothers, Dr. R. B., Carl, and Arthur Nall of Sherman, and a sister, Mrs. O. H. Hargett of Amarillo, Texas.

For fifteen years he served as member of the board of education, and helped to promote the building of the school structure that now stands. Never sleeping on the job when the educational advantages of the community be at hazard.
He was born into a Methodist home and tended to lean toward that faith during his lifetime. He believed sincerely in his Marker, but cared for no mock or hypocrisy. He was no Pharisee, but worshipped in the simplicity of his heart. And those who were closest to him never doubted that when God reached out to take his spirit from the world, October 14, 1943 that he mingles with the seraphs of the Heavenly Kingdom.
