My grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Edmondson, lived one mile west of Deer Grove School.(1) So I have known the people in that community all my life. One of the first teachers there boarded with my grandparents, but I can't recall her name. Some of the teachers I do remember were: Mrs. Joe Ballard, deceased. Miss Helen Huffman, married and living in Kansas City. Miss Mary Taber, now Mrs. Ivan English, living in Waurika, Oklahoma. I am Miss Nora Taber, R.N., retired (medical) living in Waurika. Miss Willie Mae Totty, now Mrs. Ben Pryer of Oklahoma City. Mrs. Gordon Cruce, now in California. Mrs. Nora Alyce Elkins, co-owner of Elkins Market, in Waurika.
The people of Deer Grove community have stayed close to home. Most of the farms in the district are still owned by some descendant of the original homesteaders, sometimes a son or daughter, or sometimes grand children. In the Deer Grove area there are many oak and pecan trees, hills and fine springs of water. One large spring much used by the 1901 settlers is still running and has never been dry.

Deer Grove School closed about 1944-1946. The old school building was used for community meetings until 1954 when it was sold to a neighborhood farmer. But, before it could be moved, it burned.
Today (1965) the old school site has been plowed and planted to wheat.
