Robert McCarver

POTEAU — Robert McCarver, 68, of Poteau died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in Fort Smith. He served in the Air Force from 1953 to 1957, his tours of duty included Texas, Mississippi and Japan, received a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University, a master’s degree from Southwestern Oklahoma University, taught science at Duke, Canton, Sentinel and Moore, Okla., and was active in tutoring students after retirement.

Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. today at First Southern Baptist Church in Wister with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.

He is survived by two sisters, Winona Bohannon of Howe and Virgie Stanton of Lawton, Okla.


Robert McCarver, 68, of Poteau, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in Fort Smith. He served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957. His tours of duty included Texas, Mississippi and Japan. He had a bachelors of science from Northeastern State University, and a master's degree from Southwestern Oklahoma University. He taught Science at Duke, Canton, Sentinel and Moore.

He retired from teaching in 1990 and returned to eastern Oklahoma and was still active in education by tutoring students that needed a little extra help. He never met a stranger and his door was always open. 

He was preceded in death by his twin brother Bryan; and his parents. 

Survivors include two sisters, Winona Bohannon of Howe and Virgie Stanton of Lawton; one brother-in-law, Jim Stanton of Lawton; one sister-in-law, Carolyn McCarver of Poteau; two nephews, Keith McCarver and Mark Bohannon; two nieces, Cheryl Craig of Poteau and Anita Clingan of Noble; four great-nieces; and one great-nephew; and countless friends and former students.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 at First Southern Baptist Church in Wister. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
