Ray Floyd Kirkland, 79, of Shady Point, passed away May 18, 2009, in Fort Smith, Ark. He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Stapp-Zoe.

He was retired from law enforcement working as security at Blue Ribbon Downs, as an officer with the Bokoshe Police Department and Poteau Police Department. He was the LeFlore County Sheriff from 1977 until 1985 and was the Under-sheriff from 1974 until 1975. He also worked as a jailer and was the oldest living county sheriff. He owned and operated a service station, was a rancher, ran a sawmill and worked for LeFlore County District No. 1.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of the home; sons and daughter-in-law, Larry and Janet6 Kirkland of Calhoun and Richard Kirkland of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and David Nichols and Jeanette and Danny Baxter, all of Poteau, and Amanda and Greg Grogan of Defuniak Springs, Fla.; step-daughters and sons-in-law Deborah S. and Gary Manley of Mena, Ark., and Thersa Ann and Robert Lamont and Cindy and Steve Farmer, all of Tahlequah; step-son and daughter-in-law Stanley Webb Randolph Jr. and Thelma of Sapulpa; 27 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives, friends and love ones.

Services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Victory Worship Center, Spiro, with Rev. Jimmy D. Cook officiating. Interment will be in Shady Point Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Claudie Higgins, Dale Whitecotton, Steve Hensley, Bob Campbell, Ricky Wilson and Carl Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Kendall Ballew, David Henson, Jim Kersh, Lester English, B.J. Smith, Jim Sommers, Jack England, Darrell Barham, Bill Morton, Roy Gentry, Charles Hurley, Lance Smith, Carroll Rogers, Freddy Cox, Bill Seale and Doug Ridner.  There will be a meal at Victory Worship Center after the church service before going to the cemetery. All food should be brought to the church by 1 pm the day of the service.

The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. to visit with relatives and friends.
