Mr. Lehman L. Brightman
Mr. Brightman, a Sioux and Creek Indian was born on the
Cheyenne river Sioux Reservation in South Dakota and was raised in Oklahoma.
He is currently the president of United Native Americans, Inc., a n Organization
dedicated to the advancement of Indian rights.
Mr. Brightman is a former track and football player from
Oklahoma State Uiversity where he earned his Bachelor's degree. He earned
his Master's degree from UC Berkeley and founded the first Native American
Studies Program there in 1969. He has since taught at UC San Diego, Sacramento
State University and is currently teaching at both Contra Costa College
and D-Q University in Davis, CA.
He is tha author of numerous articles on the history of
Indian education and federal borading schools on reservations. He was involved
in the occupation of Alcatraz Island, the take-over of Wounded Knee and
the occupation of Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. He has been on the Phill
Donahue Show three times and was one of the organizers of the Longest Walk
in 1976 and the Long Walk for Survival in 1978.
At the present time Mr. Brighman resides in Pinole, CA
with his three sons. He is currently working on a book about the Indian
Civil Rights Movement.
