Arlis Gorman Underwood1947-1965The Checotah News, July 23, 1965, Page 1Arlis Underwood Drowns at LakeArlis Gorman Underwood, 17 years old Checotah youth, was drowned while swimming in Lake Eufaula Wednesday afternoon. The youngster, with a party of friends, was swimming in the roped off area at Belle Starr park. Mrs. Goldia Hayes, who was chaperoning the group called for a 'name check' at 7:15 p.m. Arlis did not answer and could not be found. None of the bathers heard any cry for help or had seen him in any difficulty. His body was found about 11:55 p.m. by the Highway Patrol safety unit. The other young people in the ill-fated party were Mickey and Kenneth Hayes, Mary and Nancy Gibbs and Dempsey Smith. Arlis, a student at Checotah High school was born September 6, 1947 at Blue Eye, Mo. and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan O. Underwood, 512 East Okmulgee. He is survived by his parents, four brothers, Earnest, Joseph, Floyd and Carl of the home; Two sisters, Mrs Artis Tankersley and Clarisa Underwood of the home. Funeral services are incomplete.
