Black Beaver, A Chief of the Delaware and U. S. Army Scout

Black Beaver was born at the present site of Belleville, Ill.  in 1806 and died in Anadarko, I. T. on May 8, 1880.  From 1834 to his death,  his services were in constant demand by the U. S. Government and Captain Randolph Marcy and were invaluable to the military and scientific explorers of the plains and the Rocky Mountains.  Black Beaver was chief of a band of 500 Delaware Indians living on the Canadian River who toOK possession of the Camp Arbuckle in 1851 when the Army moved to the new location of Ft. Arbuckle on the Wild Horse Creek and Washita.  When the Civil War erupted, Black beaver lead the Federal Troops from Ft. Washita and Ft. Arbuckle to safety in Kansas at Ft. Leavenworth.
