Woodland Joint Consolidated District #1

Located 10 miles west of Davis in Garvin County is Woodland School CJ-1.  Old Howard, District 21, in Murray County and a large area, mostly in the Arbuckle Mountains, but in a joint district, the supervision went to the county with the largest area.

Old Hoover/Goosenest No. 35 and Oak Ridge No. 34 in Garvin County consolidated with Howard April 17, 1939 making Consolidated-Joint District #1 in Murray County.

In May of 1940, Colbert District #25 Murray County and Homer District #49, west of Hennepin in Carter County, were annexed to Woodland School giving the school now 114 miles of area in three counties.

Early board members were Tom Grant, W. T. Myers and F. Q. Chambless.  The name and number D-4 were assigned by state law in 1949.

A new native stone building was built and a good 12 year school was maintained serving several smaller districts with transportation for the high school transfers.

A good record was made in scholastic ratings and in basketball both in boys and girls teams with both winning state titles.  The 4-H program was of top ranking and many records were achieved in this field.

Woodland continued to operate until 1968 when low enrollment caused a failure to meet state requirements for accreditation.  On July 12, 1968, the Woodland School district was annexed to Davis I-10 in Murray County.

From the personal notes of Oscar Huffines, County Superintendent, 1975.
