Mosaic Templars of America
Location: Little Rock, Arkansas
Mosaic Templars of America Headquarters
Once headquarters for one of the largest African-American
fraternal organizations in the country, this 1911 structure
is scheduled for restoration in the future.
900 Broadway
Little Rock AR 72201
One such fraternal organization, the Mosaic Templars of America,
was founded in Little Rock in the late 1800s by John Bush and
Chester W. Keatts, initially to provide burial insurance policies to
African Americans. It quickly expanded into operating a building and
loan association, hospitals and teaching facilities and other
enterprises. Shortly after the organization built its impressive
three-story headquarters building in downtown Little Rock in 1911,
it became the largest black-owned and capitalized enterprise in the
country. Unfortunately, like many other businesses during the Great
Depression, the Mosaic Templars financial empire had crumbled by
the 1930s, but the headquarters building continued to function for
many years as the cornerstone of African American social and
cultural life in Little Rock. It is still standing at Ninth and Broadway
and the descendants of the original founders of the Mosaic
Templars are still living in Little Rock today.
This sure seems to be what we are looking for!
