A tale told to Amanda Kimball by her mother
Negro Legend
One night a young woman started to a dance carrying a young baby in her
arms. Her husband had gone on ahead of her. It was beginning
to get dark and she saw something standing near a tree. She thought
this was her husband, so she walked up to him and handed him the baby.
He took the baby and started off down the road. When they got in the
house there sat her husband without the baby. She asked him where
the baby was and he told her she had not given it to him. They all
went to look for the baby but he couldn't be found. They searched
for several days and at last they found the child in a bear's den.
The bear was carrying corn for the baby to eat. They killed the
bear and took the baby . He was not harmed, but the woman never
did give her baby to a bear again.
