Fields aka Drum Cemetery

The land belonging to this cemetery was donated by former slave Green Fields. Even though he donated the land, because he was a black man he was not allowed to be buried among the white and in Indian people in the cemetery. When Mr. Fields died in 1891, he was buried in a section of the cemetery that was some distance away from the white and Indian people. Ironically, due to the number of burials in the cemetery since Mr. Fields' death, his grave is almost in the geographical center of the cemetery. He now is as equal as anyone.
Shortly after WWI a flu epidemic hit the Porum area. According to one old timer:"They dug graves for 3 weeks in order to keep up with the deaths". Information generously provided by Gary Lester, Braggs.
