I have a gr/grandma born in Muskogee county (Fort Gibson) in 1871. Have reason to believe from an as yet unsubstantiated "hit" that her parents, William Thomas and Jennie (Westerfield) Thomas came from KY betw. 1866 and 1871. Also, from this source, Jennie's dad, possibly a JOHN WESTERFIELD, also moved from KY to Fort Gibson and that he died there. Any information about the WESTERFIELDS particularly, would be LOVED! The issue of William and Jenny Thomas are: MINNIE and Harry, et.al. Will look all that up if you write! Tia. Joan sealuv@ponyexpress.net

I am looking for Indian ancestors, either Cherokee or Creek. My great-great-grandmother on my mother's side was Mary Hawk, who married Stephen Gardner McCray near Burwell, GA, which is in the county of Carroll and near present-day Bowdon, GA. Her father, Jerry Hawk, was supposedly deported to Oklahoma as a result of the removal of Native Americans in that area--I think in the 1830s. Would really like to find out about my Indian heritage, of which I am very proud. Do know that Mary Hawk was a superb outdoorswoman, who helped to feed her family through fishing and trapping. She used to take her son, William Henry McCray (my great-grandfather), with her when she went fishing. One day an eagle swooped down and tried to fly away with her son, but she was able to chase it away and thus save her son. The area where my great-grandparents lived was Creek territory according to some relatives, but the name Hawk appears to be Cherokee. Would appreciate any help you could give, especially if my great-great-grandfather Jerry Hawk could be located somewhere. Thank you.
