Cassius McDonald Barnes
Cassius M. Barnes was born in Livingston County, New York, on August 25, 1845. While he was a child, his parents moved to Michigan, where he was educated. During the Civil War he served in an engineer company in the quartermaster corps and in the military telegraph corps. After the end of the war, he settled at Little Rock, Arkansas, where he held several appointive positions in the government service. In 1889, he was appointed receiver of the Land Office, at Guthrie, Oklahoma, a position which he held for four years. In 1894, he was elected to the lower house of the Territorial Legislative Assembly and was chosen speaker of that body. Two years later, he again represented his district in the Assembly. He served a full term of four years as governor. After his retirement from the governor's office, he served two terms as mayor of Guthrie. He moved to Kansas, then to New Mexico, where he died at Albuquerque, February 1925. He was removed to Guthrie where he was buried..
