Robert Lee Williams

Robert L. Williams was born at Brundidge, Alabama, December 20, 1868. He earned a number of college degrees including a law degree. He was admitted to the practice of law, in 1891 and began his professional career at Troy, Alabama. In 1897, he located at Atoka, Indian Territory, and a few months later at Durant. He was chosen as a delegate to the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention, in 1906. He took an active part in the deliberations of the Convention and was the author of many of the most advanced and progressive features of the constitution which it framed. In the election of 1907, he was chosen as a Justice of the Supreme Court. In 1908, he was reelected. In 1914, he was nominated and elected to the office of governor. At the end of his term, he was named as United States District Judge for the eastern district of Oklahoma. He later resided in Muskogee and Durant, where he died on April 10, 1948. He was a democrat.
