Allen Wright
Allen Wright was born in Mississippi about 1825. With his parents he moved to the Indian Territory in the big Choctaw migration, in 1832. His mother died during the journey to the West and his father did not live long after the arrival in the new country. He made his home with the family of one of the Presbyterian missionaries and his education was begun in the mission schools. He was prepared for college and then went East to complete his education. He graduated from Union College, Schenectady, New York, in 1852, and from the Union Theological Seminary, New York City, in 1855. Returning to the Choctaw Nation, he was ordained to the ministry and thenceforward labored among the people of his own tribe. He was one of the commissioners to negotiate a new treaty with the United States. He was the author or compiler of a translation of the Psalms from the Hebrew directly into Choctaw. He died in 1885.
