John Arch Winchester was born December 7, 1877 in Rockingham County, North Carolina, a son of Confederate Army veteran John E. Winchester and Jennie McDonald. He married Alice McCulley in 1897 in Fannin County, Texas. The children of John Arch Winchester and Alice McCulley were: Julius L. Winchester, born January 21, 1899 in Honey Grove, Texas; Sue Winchester, born April 13, 1900 in Windom, Texas; Alma Winchester, born September 5, 1901 in Windom, Texas; Bertha Winchester, born March 21, 1903 in Prague, Oklahoma; William Pinkney Winchester, born September 13, 1906 in Prague, Oklahoma; and Robert Lee Winchester, born July 14, 1908 in Okemah, Oklahoma.
Known as "Arch" to his family and associates, John Arch Winchester was a farmer all of his working life. His son, Robert Lee, also was a farmer. His sons Julius and William ("Mike') were businessmen. Neither Arch nor his sons served in the military. However, many of his grandsons are veterans of military service during World War II and subsequent wars.
Arch was eight years old when his parents and brothers and sisters moved from Rockingham County, North Carolina to Fannin County, Texas. Arch and his own family moved from Fannin County, Texas to Okfuskee County, Oklahoma in 1902 when he was 25 years of age. For 46 years, he owned and farmed an acreage located on Route 1, just off State Highway 62, about halfway between Prague and Paden in Okfuskee County. Arch died of heart failure on May 21, 1948 at University Hospital in Oklahoma City. He is buried with his wife, Alice McCulley Winchester, at the Prague Cemetery in Lincoln County, Oklahoma.
As of 1999, the children of John Arch Winchester and Alice McCulley Winchester were deceased. Their grandchildren and most of their great-grandchildren resided in Oklahoma, Texas, California, and Colorado.
