AHTONE, Dr. James K. was born on December 9, 1944 in Oklahoma City and passed away at Mercy Health Center on April 27, 2000 after his courageous battle with cancer.
He attended Oklahoma City Public Schools. He was a 1964 graduate of Northwest Classen High School where he was a letterman in track and cross-country. He attended he University of Central Oklahoma where he graduated with a degree in Education. He later received a Masters Degree from Oklahoma City University in Criminal Justice and Education. He then attended the University of Oklahoma where he received his Doctorate Degree in Education. He was a proud member of the Chickasaw and Kiowa Nations. Jim, as his and associates knew him, was a person who dedicated his life to helping his fellow man and Native Americans. He was serving as the Director for Vocational Rehab and PWI for the Cheyenne/Arapaho Tribe in Concho, Oklahoma at the time of his death. Jim was a military veteran, serving a tour of duty in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict. Jim was a member of the Baptist Temple Church.
His mother, Ruth Moss, of Oklahoma City and his two close cousins, Bob Bemo and Tommy Thompson, from Oklahoma City survive him. Other survivors are: Joanie Thompson, Denaro Bemo, Madeline Bemo and family; Betty Lucas and family; Monzella Golden and family; Ann Butler and family; Jay and Oleta Keel and family; Kenneth & Kay Keel and family; Earle Keel and family; Leland and Yvonne Keel and family; and Robert Keel.
Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Cancer Society or the charity of choice. Services will be held at Smith & Kernke Chapel, 14624 N. May Ave. at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2000, officiated by Reverend Steve T. Lucas and Reverend Jay Keel.
