BIRDSONG Kenneth Alan, age 51, Joplin, Missouri, beloved son,
husband, father, grandfather, and friend, went home to be with
his Lord on December 6, 2000 . He battled a long illness with
cancer and is finally at peace and rest. He was born January 12,
1949, in Marshall, MO, the son of Ramona Snodgrass Birdsong and George
Birdsong. He grew up in Kansas City, MO, married Delta
Mullen and they moved to the Carthage and Joplin, MO area. He
worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific
Railroad as a locomotive engineer for 25 years. Kenneth was a
member of Church of Christ, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive
Engineers. He was a dedicated fan of the St. Louis Cardinals
baseball team and most especially, Mark McGuire.
He is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 30 years, Delta
Birdsong; daughters, Ruthann Paugh, Janice Harrison, her
husband, Jake; a son, Ryan Birdsong; grandchildren, Aaron
Birdsong and Dacoda Paugh. He is also survived by his mother,
Ramona Mclntire of Joplin, MO; his father, George Birdsong and
wife, Betty of OKC; and stepbrother, Denny Albee of Southbury,
Connecticut; and numerous family and friends. He had a kind,
generous, loving heart, sharing always of himself and his
resources with others. Nothing was more important than his
family, whom he loved dearly. Kenny stronqly believed in a
supreme being and found peace and comfort from his belief in
God. He enjoyed the company of his family and many friends, and
if you needed a place to stay, his home was your home. Kenny
believed with absolute certainty that he would go on to a better
life and we who love him, wish him well on his journey. We are
thankful for our loving memories. Kenny ran trains on the MOP
from Carthage to Kansas City. After the MP merged with the UP,
he ran trains be tween Coffeyville, KS and McAlester, OK. His
special request was to have an engine etched upon his headstone.
Our thanks to Drs. Makdisa and Croy; to St. Johns Hospice; to
all of our neighbors and friends, whose help was so graciously
given. A special thank you to Jeff Jenkins and those wonderful
members of the BLE who donated their special leave days to
Kenny. Thanks also to Ministers Jim Poland and Joe McGee; also
to members of Elm Road Church of Christ. Thank you Union Pacific
Railroad. Our thanks to George Jackson of Houston, Texas for his
friendship and counsel.
"No FUNERAL GLOOM, my dears, when I am gone,
Corpse-gazings, tears, black rainment, graveyard grimness, Think
of me as withdrawn into the dimness, Yours still, you mine.
Remember all the best of past moments and forget the rest, And
so to where I wait come gently on." (Ellen Terry).
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 9,
2000, at Elm Road Church of Christ, Carthage, MO, with Minister
Jim Poland officiating, interment at Oak Hill Cemetery,
Carthage, MO. Family will greet visitors at the funeral home
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8th.
