Walter J. Cates, Veteran Grocer in City, Dies.
Walter J. Cates, who since 1905 had operated grocery stores in the city died of a heart ailment Monday night at his home, 3725 Maney Avenue, after a month's illness.
Born February 13, 1871 in Mason City, Illinois, Cates came to Oklahoma City from Hastings, Nebraska. Retiring from the grocery business about four years ago, he bought the Eastern Avenue Produce Company which he operated until last November. Services will be announced by Perrine Funeral Home.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Robert H. Penny, 130 NW 21st Street and Mrs. Keith Cogswell, 2133 NW 26th Street and a son, Jerome Cates of Los Angeles, California.
