4 Vote Guilty Against Phelan
Physician Is Exonerated By Lodge, However, After An Impassioned Plea.
The investigating committee appointed by the Eagles to inquire into the
identity of the person or persons holding a criminal autopsy upon the body
of Harry Grinstead, who died in Bethany hospital August 8, reported
their findings to the lodge membership last night.
The verdict held Dr. J. S. Phelan, superintendent of the hospital at the
time of the death of Grinstead, guilty and recommended his expulsion from
the fraternity by a vote of four to six. The report, however, was not
accepted by the membership, which, after an impassioned appeal of twenty
minutes by Attorney E. J. Giddings, in Pholan's behalf, voted the accused
physician irresponsible.
"I am wholly innocent of the charge" says Dr. Phelan. "The
vote for my exoneration stood 128 to 6. It was a 'picked' committee that
made the investigation."
