Navy medic laid to rest
sMarcellus, NY -- Navy medic Jon T. Hardenburgh, of Marcellus,
was buried today in a full military service at Highland Cemetery
in Marcellus.
More than 100 family and friends gathered first at Plis Funeral
Home to salute Hardenburgh, a decorated hospital corpsman who
joined the Navy right after graduating from Marcellus High
School in 1995. Hardenburgh, 33, died June 20 at his home
outside Oklahoma City, OK., where he was stationed with the Navy
at Tinker Air Force Base. His cause of death is under
investigation.
Hardenburgh was remembered as someone who loved to play a
friendly prank as much as he enjoyed helping others in need. He
was "brazenly patriotic,'' quirky funny, and loyal to family,
God and country, mourners said.
He served five missions in the Mideast and received numerous
military honors including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement
Medal six times. Once, while he was stationed overseas, he and a
group of other sailors helped paint an orphanage in their free
time, the Rev. Barry Sisson said in his eulogy.
"He gave of himself for other people. He wasn't about the
medals, he was about people,'' said Sisson, pastor of Grace
Chapel in Skaneateles.," At the cemetery, seven sailors
fired 21 rounds from their rifles and another sailor played
"Taps'' on his bugle while thunder rumbled in the background.
Hardenburgh's parents, Janet of Marietta, and Gary of
Baldwinsville, each received American flags.
"There's no worse feeling than a father having to bury his
son,'' Gary Hardenburgh said after the ceremony.
