Member of Noted Family is Dead
Mrs. Sallie Harris, aged 77 years, sister of former United States
Senator Frank Cockrell of Missouri, died of senile debility at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Shannon, 1324 West Third street, last evening. Mrs.
Harris has been in ill health for more than a year and came to Oklahoma City
from Burnet, Tex., four months ago to visit her daughter.
Mrs. Harris was the aunt of Judge Joseph Cockrell of Dallas, Tex., and
former Congressman Varde Cockrell of Abilene, Texas. Relatives have been
notified of her death.
Funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 2:30 o'clock this
afternoon by the Rev. J. H. O. Smith, pastor of the First Christian church.
Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Harris was born and reared near Warrensburg, Mo. She was married to
Dr. William Harris and they emigrated to Texas by wagon train in 18__ when
the nearest railway was at least 1,000 miles distant. The emigrants followed
the old Chisholm trail.
Three children, William, who is now in Wyoming, Joseph, who is in
Mississippi and Mrs. J. A. Shannon of Oklahoma City, were born. The husband
died in 18__ in Texas. His was the first Masonic funeral held in the Lone
Star state.
