Mercy Hospital Founder Dies at Age of 79

Dr. Paul E. Haskett, 79, of 1941 NW 19, city physician and a founder of Mercy Hospital, died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital. Services are pending with Smith & Kernke Funeral HOme.

Haskett was born in Baxter Springs, Kan., where he attended shcool until entering pre-medical study at the University of Illinois. He received his MD from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. in 1917. After serving with the army medical corps, he returned to Philadelphia where he married Mary Shelly.

He moved to Oklahoma City in 1920 and opened a family practice. In 1926, in association with two other physicians, he assumed ownership of the Baptist Hosptial, NW 12 and Walker, change the name to Oklahoma General Hospital. In 1947, when the Catholic nursing sisters took over the facility, the name was again changed, this time to Mercy Hosptial.

Survivors include his brother, Frank, 2900 N Robinson.
