HOGARD Berton Wesley Hogard, 93, passed away on Thursday,
October 26, 2000. Berton was born on January 23, 1907 in the
Missouri Ozarks, the fifth child of John S. and Lorena
Hogard.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings. Berton
attended Gainesville High School, passed the County Teacher's
Examination during his junior year, and graduated with the class
of 1926. He attended Southwest Missouri Teacher's College in
Springfield, MO, while continuing to teach in various country
schools. After moving to Oklahoma in 1929, Berton continued his
education at Northeastern State College and Central State
Teacher's College (now UCO). He received his Bachelor's degree
in Science from Central in 1934 and his Master's Degree in City
School Administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1943.
Berton taught at Oakdale, Arcadia (where he was also principal
and superintendent), and various Oklahoma City schools. He
retired as principal of Horace Mann Elementary School in 1972.
In 1979, Berton published a book, "My 46 Years in Public
Education," which chronicles his career and gives tribute
to his family and friends. Berton was very proud of his many
years of service to young people. He was an active, life member
of the Oklahoma Education Association, the Association of
Oklahoma Retired Teachers, and the Central State University
Alumni Association, and served on the Board of Directors of the
Teachers' Credit Union for many years.
Berton married Leah Derrick on March 30, 1929. She preceded
him in death on June 14, 1968, after 39 years of marriage and
three children.
He is survived by sons Berton Warren Hogard and Henry Lee
Hogard, and daughter Sharon Hogard Lyne, six grandchildren, 4
great-grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren.
Berton married June Sears Rhoades
on July 3, 1973. Berton and June enjoyed their retirement
together fishing, bowling, gardening, and traveling. They were
also active in their Sunday School class at Meadowood Baptist
Church.
Berton is survived by his loving wife, June, her children,
David Rhoades and Colleen Park, 6 grandchildren, and 4
great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Monday, October 30, 2000 at
Meadowood Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m., with interment
immediately following at Memorial Park.
