Final Services for Mrs. Knott To Be Monday
The giant un-pruned elm stands alone at “The
Blackjacks” now.
For more than 63 years it was jealously
protected, first by George A. Knott who planted it and, until
Thursday, by Mrs. Knott who refused to allow anyone to even
prune the big tree.
Mrs. Knott died Thursday night in the
pioneer home where she and her husband first came to live in
1902. She was 87. Her husband, a Yale graduate and classmate of
William Howard Taft, died in 1924. He was once collector of
internal revenue here.
The Knotts moved to Oklahoma City from
Guadalajara, Mexico, where they had operated a private school.
They purchased a 320 acre farm home 12 miles east of town. Years
later G. A. Nichols built Nicoma Park on all but 10 acres of the
home place. Mrs. Knott retained that much.
Mrs. Knott named Nicoma Park at Nichols’
request, taking Nic for Nichols and oma from Oklahoma.
Nicoma
For many years before his death Knott was
Sunday school superintendent at First Presbyterian church and
Mrs. Knott taught Sunday school there.
It was the same sentiment which protected
the tree that caused Mrs. Knott to keep the worn rug on her
living room floor on which she and Knott stood at their wedding.
The rug was a gift from Knott’s Yale fraternity.
Mrs. Knott had been in poor health about a
year.
Survivors are her sister, Mrs. E. B.
Ringland, 1115 N. Central and a niece, Mrs. Katherine Ringland,
of the same address.
Funeral will be in Street & Draper funeral
home at 4 pm Monday. Rev W. Ward Davis and Rev. L. C. Walter
will conduct services. Interment will be in
Rose Hill cemetery.
