Mrs. Mittie McCalister, 86 years old, a native of Texas and a
state resident many years, died at the infirmities of age
Saturday at her home, 3125 North Shartel avenue.
Mrs. McCalister, a city resident since 1934, was the mother of
Miss Lela McCalister, home address, a teacher of the Edgemere
school, and Wayde McCalister, 1130 Woodlawn avenue, principal of
Britton high school.
She was born Nov 5, 1855, at Pilot Point, Texas and was a
distant kin of Josephus Daniels, former ambassador to Mexico.
Mrs. McCalister, a member of the Christian church, was married
in 1877 and first came to Oklahoma in 1896, settling at
Hartshorne, where her husband, the late D. H. McCalister, was
superintendent of bridge construction work for a railroad.
After two years at Hartshorne, the couple moved back to Texas,
but returned to Oklahoma in 1904 and settled at Durant. There
McCalister engaged in strawberry farming and was associated with
the Trimble-McCalister Fruit Co., which shipped the first train
load of strawberries out of the states.
In 1916 the McCalisters moved to Norman. Mr. McCalister died in
1924.
Rites will be at 10 am Monday at the Smith and Kernke funeral
home.
