Lineman Who Swiped Poles 'Legally' Dies

A. C. Redman, 88, Was Pioneer City Telephone Worker

In was a case of "finders-keepers" as far as poles were concerned in the days when A. C. Redman, 88 years old, was stringing telephone wires to modernize the little village of Oklahoma City.

Redman, who strung his last wire almost 15 years ago, died Saturday at him home, 2205 North Lottie avenue. He had been ill since last January when he fell and broke his hip.

One of his favorite stories was of the days when telephone and electric light crews took all the poles they could find loose. It wasn't stealing so much as it was a matter of a lack of materials so great that ingenuity was demanded as much as labor.

"We didn't have any fights about them (the poles) because the light company fellows knew they'd get even by swiping out poles," Redman once said....

Redman was working for the Pioneer Telephone co. when it was sold to Southwestern Bell.

Redman was born Aug 15, 1853, at Platte City, Mo. He moved from Texas to Wynnewood, Okla. and also was a former resident of Ardmore. He was a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic church.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, C. A. Redman, 115 Northwest Twenty-ninth street; Lee Redman, Duluth, Minn., and Frank, Beaumont, Texas and a daughter, Mrs. Lydia McAllister, who lives in California.
Arrangements will be announced by the Perrine funeral home.
