Helene Mary Shadid. Services will be conducted Monday, August
31 at 10:30 a.m. in the Fairlawn Cemetery in Oklahoma City under
the direction of the Martin Funeral Home in Elk City.
Helene Mary Shadid was born in Carter, Oklahoma on September 18,
1918. She passed away on August 29, 1992 in Elk City, at the age
of 73. Her family moved to Elk City when she was 6 years old and
she attended school in Elk City.
Miss Shadid was the first WAC volunteer from Beckham County in
World War II. She served as a medical detachment supply sergeant
in the Air Warning Service of the U.S. Army, later was a
recruiting officer for 18 months in Virginia and then stationed
at Fort Meade, Maryland.
She resided in Oklahoma City for many years but returned to Elk
City three years ago.
Her father, Dr. Michael Shadid , gained national recognition as
the founder of the Community Hospital here in Elk City, which
was the first Cooperative Hospital. He preceded her in death in
1966, her mother Edna in 1953, two sisters, Ruth and Ethel and
one brother, Dr. Alex Shadid . She is survived by one sister,
Mrs. Bess Campbell of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and one brother, Dr. Fred
Shadid of Santa Monica, California. Interment
Fairlawn Cemetery.
