Charlotte News, The
Charlotte, North Carolina
July 20, 2009
Ray Shaw, the chairman of American City Business Journals,
the parent company of Triangle Business Journal, died Sunday
morning due to complications from a insect sting. He was 75
years old.
His sons, Whitney and Kirk Shaw, also executives with
Charlotte-based ACBJ, announced their father’s passing in an
e-mail to employees Sunday afternoon.
Ray Shaw was one of the biggest names in business journalism. An
Oklahoma native, he attended but did not graduate from
the University of Oklahoma. He then embarked on a journalism
career with a job with the Associated Press in Oklahoma City. AP
subsequently moved Shaw to stints in Louisville, Ky., and New
York
Shaw started in the news business when he was in high school
as a reporter for his hometown newspaper in El Reno, Oklahoma.
In 1960, he began what would be a 29-year career at Dow Jones &
Co., starting as a reporter at The Wall Street Journal and
rising up the ranks into editorial positions at The Journal and
other Dow Jones publications. He then moved over to the business
side of the company, eventually climbing the ladder all the way
to the position of president and chief operating officer.
Ray
Shaw is survived by his wife, Kay (also from Oklahoma), sons
Whitney and Kirk and their spouses, his daughter, Beth and her
husband, and seven grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are
pending.
