Shirk Rites Set for Today
Pioneer Attorney Sick Five Months
Services for John H. Shirk, veteran attorney and pioneer city
resident who died Friday morning, will be at 4.30 pm Saturday at
First Lutheran church with Rev. C. N. Swilhart officiating.
Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery. The body will lie in state
at the church from 1.30pm to 4pm.
Shirk, who had been ill five months, had been a resident of
Oklahoma City since1907, when he moved here from Elkhart, Ind.
In 1909 he formed a partnership with Harris L. Danner, which
continued until Danner's death several years ago. Shirk received
his law degree from University of Oklahoma.
As chairman of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce
open shop division in 1933, Shirk headed an attack on attempts
to unionize the city through willful misinterpretation of the
national recovery act. In 1934, he was elected chairman of the
bureau of Commerce. And in 1935 he was elected president of the
Camp Fire executive board.
Survivors include his wife, three sons, a daughter, three
brothers and a sister.

Carrie Shirk Mayor's Kin Dead at 80
Mrs. Carrie H. Shirk, 80, mother of Mayor George H. Shirk, died
Friday at her home at 5201 Vernon Rd.
Services are pending with Street and Draper Funeral Home.
Mrs. Shirk was born in Goshen, Ind. She had lived in Oklahoma
City since 1909. She was the past president of the New Century
Club and Cosopolitan Club and a member of St. Paul's American
Lutheran Church. Mrs. Shirk attended St. Mary's College, South
Bend, Indiana.
Other survivors include two sons,
John R., Glendora, Calif.,
and Maj. Paul R., with the US Army, Fort Bragg , one daughter,
Lucyl A. Shirk, of the home, Executive Director of the Campfire
Girls.
