SHIRK John Raymond (Jack) Shirk , Jr., born in Chicago, IL,
on April 26, 1940, died suddenly of a heart attack on August 21,
2000, in LaPlace, LA. Son of the late
John R. and Mae E. (Meier)
Shirk , beloved father of John Christopher Shirk and Charles
Aaron Shirk , both of Marietta, GA, and a daughter, Kim Shirk of
Tulsa.
He was the brother of Jill S. and Ernest W. Cockrell of San
Jose, CA, and Judith M. and Gareth R. Barr of Oklahoma City; the
nephew of Mary and John Flodin of Schaumberg, IL, Jane and
Jerald Jackson of Minneapolis, MN; and Estelle Shirk of
California. He was the proud uncle of Stephanie C. Lyon of Aliso
Viejo, CA; John Cockrell, of Los Angeles, CA; Andrew Barr of
Warrenville, IL; and Stephanie Barr of Oklahoma City; and
devoted great-uncle of Jamie Lyon.
He is also survived by numerous cousins and life-long
friends. A graduate of Northwest Classen High School, Jack
received his BA from Oklahoma City University, and a Masters
from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. He was on the
faculties of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and
the University of South Carolina, Columbia. For a number of
years he served as technical director of Lyric Theater at OCU,
starting with its inaugural season. He traveled extensively
around the United States and Europe with road companies of
several Broadway musicals, including "Annie," and his favorite
production: "Toller Cranston's The Ice Show."
At the time of his death he was the Director of Productions
of the New Orleans Convention Center, New Orleans, LA.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the OKC Animal
Shelter... He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, August 27, 2000
at Church of the Savior, 5600 NW 63rd. Interment to follow at
Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
