Olus Lee Sparkman Longtime Shawnee and Tecumseh area resident Olus Lee "Sparky" Sparkman, 84, died Wednesday, March 30, in Tecumseh. He was born Aug. 16, 1920, in Maud to Clarence and Mary Sparkman. He was married June 8, 1939, in Chandler to Elsie Jones. She preceded him in death March 8, 1999. Sparkman has been in the gasoline business more than 60 years. In the late 1960s he purchased Modern Oil Co. and served as president and chairmen of the board since that time. He also was the founder of Kwick Stop convenience stores. He also was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Elvin and Leonard Sparkman and daughter-in-law, Suzanne Sparkman. Survivors include two sons, Patrick Olus Sparkman and wife, Sharon, of Tecumseh and Michael Lee Sparkman and wife, Kathy of Chula Vista, Calif.; five grandchildren, Kristie Sparkman Homuth, Sean Sparkman, Summer Moody, Chance Sparkman and Braedan Sparkman and one great-granddaughter, Elliot Moody. Service will be 3 p.m. today at Resthaven Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mike Craig officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home of Shawnee. The casket will remain open until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
