Oklahoma Entertainer Dies at 79
Johnny Standley, an Oklahoman musician and comedian who told his fans "It's in the Book,"
died Wednesday in Los Angeles after suffering complications from pneumonia. He was 79.
In the late 1950's, Standley sold more than 1 million copies of his record, "It's in the
Book," a song that included imitations of a country preacher.
The recording was a live performance of Standley accompanied by Horace Heidt and his Musical
Knights.
Son of Jack Standley and Marjorie Farr.
Standley, formerly of Oklahoma City, began his career touring with his family, his sister,
Martha Knott said.
He also toured with Red Skelton during World War II, Knott said. Services for Standley were
held Friday in Los Angeles.
