Death Claims Grandpa Sweat
Hiram P. Sweat, better known as "Grandpa" Sweat, died at his home in Arcadia on Friday morning, December 28, 1917, aged 83 years, 8 months and 26 days. Old age and general debility was the cause of his death, and all that medical skill and loving hands could do was not sufficient to restore him to health, and he passed to his reward at a ripe old age.
He was born April 2, 1834 in Payne County, Indiana, where he grew to manhood. From there he went to Gentry County, Missouri, in 1856. He was married August 22, 1858, to Lutitia NICHOLS, and to this union ten children were born, three boys and seven girls.
Those surviving are: Willard P. SWEAT, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Russell SWEAT, Evan SWEAT, Mrs. John BOGUE, Mrs. E.B. ROBERTS, all of Arcadia. he moved with his family to Kansas in 1885, where they resided 3 years, moving to Arkansas in 1888, and from there to Oklahoma in 1889, settling 6 miles east of Arcadia. In 1904 they moved to Arcadia, where on Dec. 27, 1909, Grandma Sweat passed away, preceding her companion by 8 years. Grandpa Sweat was an old soldier and a highly respected citizen, his friends being numbered by the score.
The funeral was held at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. R.A. Brigham. Burial was made in the cemetery north of town.
