Ferne Hazel Taylor (Medcalf), age 82, Joplin, died Wednesday, October 4, 2000, in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Ferne was born on January 27, 1918, in Stevens County near Moscow, Kan., to parents Victor and Maud Miller. She moved to Joplin, Mo., in 1938, where she lived most of her life.

Ferne was employed as a secretary and an accountant for many years by companies in Joplin, Carthage, and also in Pittsburg, Kan. In 1995, after the death of her husband, Gene Taylor of Diamond, Mo., Ferne moved to Harrah, Okla. Ferne continued her membership with the 4th and Forest Church of Christ in Joplin. Ferne was also ministered to by Faith Community Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Nicoma Park, Okla. Ferne was a supporter of and participated in the local Mended Hearts group in Joplin.

Ferne is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Nina Kingry.

Ferne is survived by her only child, Merle D. Medcalf and his wife, Suzanne; her grandchildren, Jenny and Jim Nowka, Pam Russo, and Michael D. Medcalf; her great-grandchildren, Joe Elerick, Justin and James Nowka, and Mikala and Taylor Medcalf; her sister, Estelle Grasser, Rita Cale, and Loraine Allen and husband, Phil; and a number of nephews, nieces, and great-nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2000, at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. Gary Morrison, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Phillip Allen, Bradley Allen, Michale Cale, Melvin Grasser, Jim Grasser, Ronnie Gunlock and Darale Kingry.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to one of the following: 4th and Forest Church of Christ (Building Fund), in Joplin; Faith Community Christian Church (DOC), in Nicoma Park, Okla.; or any Mended Hearts organizations.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
