We have learned of the recent passing
of Roland Van Dyck, 97, the last remaining survivor of the
Ramona High School Class of 1929. Roland, of Holland, Mich., was
a member of the pioneer Van Dyck family. All of the family’s
10 children, nine boys and one girl, grew up and received their
education in Ramona.
During his school years, he showed a fine musical talent and
continued to use this talent all his life. Many will remember
his playing cornet and French harp at Ramona churches on his
visits. He continued to play at churches each Sunday until a few
weeks before his death. In fact, he made a CD of “When the
Roll is Called Up Yonder I’ll Be There” on the harp and that
was played at his funeral for a crowd of about 500.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette. Survivors
include three children and two brothers: John, 99, of Cocoa,
Fla., and Virgil, 94, of Midwest City, Okla.
John and Virgil attend every annual Ramona Alumni Reunion.
